The commodity, leaves the market, and becomes devoid of momentary value as it exits the economic chain of production and consumption, ending up as waste, a negative economic good. The waste picker, invests labour, to remake a commodity from the waste and brings it back into the economy, by collecting, segregating and reworking it. The mass produced commodity is marked by indiviuality. Natural resources are brought back into use. However this activity too, like many parts of the work and production process, is termed ‘informal,’ and ‘illegal,’ and marked by causality. It is not recognized as part of the life cycle of materials.
The commodity is marked at both ends of its cycle by human labour.
